Emergency Dental Assistance on Duty
Emergency dental examinations are mostly sought for complaints such as emergency toothache, emergency tooth fracture, tongue-lip-cheek injuries, and non-stopping bleeding after tooth extraction. It is very important to come to the emergency dental service without neglecting these and similar complaints.
Dental problems requiring emergency approach are:
1. Tooth Fracture
In such a case, if possible, the broken tooth piece should be protected. After a tooth fracture, an emergency dentist should be consulted within thirty minutes. If there is bleeding in the fractured area, a compress should be applied with a clean gauze.
A mouth guard should be used to prevent mouth injuries and tooth fractures that may occur in children who do contact sports in particular.
2. Toothache
Toothache is one of the most common complaints in the emergency dental service. Instead of using painkillers unconsciously in case of pain, using scientifically unproven traditional methods, a health center or polyclinic that provides emergency dental service should be visited.
Causes of Emergency Toothache
- Tooth decay and tooth inflammation,
- Enamel abrasion,
- Gum diseases
- Impacted teeth (wisdom teeth)
- Toothache may be due to non-dental diseases such as sinusitis.
What to Do in Case of Emergency Toothache
- When an emergency toothache starts, an emergency dentist should be visited without wasting time. Toothache is not a self-healing condition. Examination, diagnosis, and treatment by a specialist dentist are essential.
- Aspirin or any painkiller should definitely not be applied on the aching tooth. Such drugs can cause irritation in the gums and surrounding soft tissues. This creates a burning sensation and extra pain instead of relieving the pain.
- If swelling has occurred on the face due to inflammation, a cold compress should be applied to that area.
- Food residues on the aching tooth and between the teeth should be cleaned using a toothbrush and dental floss, and half a teaspoon of salt should be added to half a glass of water, mixed, and the mouth should be rinsed thoroughly with this salt water.
Tongue - Lip - Cheek Injuries
What to Do in Case of Injury
- The injured area should be cleaned with lukewarm water.
- If there is bleeding in the wound area, pressure should be applied with gauze to stop the bleeding.
- A cold compress should be applied from outside the cheek or lip.
- If the wound is too large and bleeding continues, a dentist or the nearest emergency polyclinic should be consulted.
