Tooth extraction is not the only option in the presence of an abscess in the tooth roots. First, root canal treatment is performed. If it is not enough, there is a chance of resection. Apical resection is the provision of treatment with direct intervention from the outside to the tooth root in persistent root abscesses.
What is Apical Resection?
In the apical resection method, the inflamed area at the root tip of the tooth located in the bone is removed. In some cases, root canal treatment alone is not enough to eliminate inflammation. In such cases, apical resection is required.
In Which Cases is it Applied?
- If there are cysts in the tooth roots
- If pain continues despite root canal treatment
- In case of tooth root fracture
- If root canal treatment cannot be fully applied due to structural problems of the tooth root
- In case an instrument breaks during root canal treatment
How is it Done?
It is done under local anesthesia. This application generally takes about 30 minutes. It is realized by cleaning the infected tissues. Then the area is closed by stitching.
Things to Consider After Application
- It is necessary not to consume anything for about 2 hours after the operation.
- After that, food and drinks should be consumed lukewarm.
- The tampon should be kept for half an hour.
- Ice compress should be applied every 10 minutes for 1 day.
- The operation area should be kept clean.
- The medications given by the doctor should be used.
