Extraoral Appliances

Extraoral appliances are orthodontic devices that derive the necessary force for correcting teeth and jaw alignment from areas outside the mouth, such as the back of the head, forehead, or neck. These appliances, including Headgear and Face Masks, are essential for modifying jaw growth during childhood to resolve skeletal imbalances without the need for surgery.

Treatment Process :

Skeletal Analysis: The positions of the jaws relative to each other and the skull base are precisely analyzed using cephalometric X-rays and digital scans.

Appliance Selection: Based on the diagnosis, a Headgear (to move the upper jaw back), a Face Mask (to move the upper jaw forward), or a Chincap is chosen.

Custom Adjustment: The appliance is meticulously adjusted by an orthodontist to fit the patient's facial profile and to direct the force in the required direction.

Usage Education: The patient and parents are instructed on the specific daily wear time (usually 12-16 hours) and proper cleaning protocols.

Growth Monitoring: Monthly check-ups track the changes in the jawbones, and the intensity of the force applied by the appliance is periodically updated.

Benefits and Advantages :

Non-Surgical Correction: Prevents the need for future invasive jaw surgeries (Orthognathic Surgery) by correcting skeletal issues during the natural growth phase.

Facial Profile Improvement: By aligning the jaw structure, it significantly enhances the patient's facial aesthetics and side profile appearance.

Maximum Control: Provides the ability to apply strong, directed forces that cannot be achieved with intraoral devices alone, increasing success in complex cases.

Dental Health Support: Ensures teeth are correctly positioned within the bone, preventing future periodontal issues and jaw joint (TMJ) disorders.
